The development of robust silver halide fibre optics that can be used in conjunction with attenuated total reflectance (ATR) probes has opened up new opportunities for process spectroscopy of liquids in the 2-18µm range (1.5-6µm and 3-18µm). Sealed ATR-immersion heads provide high contrast evanescent absorption spectra in a temperature range from 0-140°C. The ATR-IR-Fibre Probe may be immersed in liquid media or attached to soft surface (tissue, polymer, powder, etc.). Typical application examples include the investigated include the authentification of wines, beers and spirits; the monitoring of esterification reactions; the monitoring of anti-solvent crystallisation of glycine; the analysis of ternary mixtures of solvents; and the determination of the hydroxyl number of polyols.
